Afghanistan Celebrates World Consumer Rights Day

Kabul, 13 March 2013:  March 15 is World Consumer Rights Day. The Government of Afghanistan will celebrate the day on 16 March 2013 at the Ministry of Commerce and Industries in Kabul starting at 9:30 a.m. This year’s theme is “Consumer Justice Now”.  To mark the day activities will include speeches and presentation aimed at sensitizing the public on the significance of the day and the consumer rights.

Afghanistan Celebrates World Consumer Rights Day

15 March 1962, John F. Kennedy, former President of the United States of America gave an address to the US congress where he formally addressed the issue of consumer rights. Kennedy was the first world leader to do so. Since then the consumer movements world over mark 15 March every year the day of raising awareness about consumer rights.

Afghanistan first celebrated the day in 2011. Mr. Hafizullah Walirahimi, Director of Competition Promotion and Consumer Protection Directorate (CPCPD), says the celebration offers a window of opportunity to be able to send a message across to the people about their rights as consumers. “This celebration is quite significant to the people of Afghanistan because it will give them a sense of understanding not only about their rights, but also about their responsibilities. It will benefit both the business community and the buyers in having fair treatment as all of them including the rest are consumers in one way or another”.

The Ministry of Commerce and Industries set up CPCPD to spearhead the establishment of a competition regime and regulatory mechanisms to protect the welfare of consumers in the country. The directorate receives technical support from the Civilian Technical Assistance Programme (CTAP) as well as from Harakat-AICFO.
